A rainy day every now and again is inevitable. Don’t let it spoil your vacation. Embrace it!
1. GO TO A THEME PARK
Seriously. A drizzly day at Busch Gardens or Kings Dominion is the best day. (I can’t believe I’m letting this cat out of the bag.) Park guests are fewer in number and as long as it’s not lightning, there’s nothing you can’t do. There are many shows and places to duck in for a while, so why not live a little? Those water rides are a great deal more appealing if you’re already a little damp, am I right?
2. CHECK OUT A CHILDREN’S MUSEUM
Little ones will run and play and blow giant bubbles and …
Hopefully, they’ll give you a moment to sit and watch or photograph them in a happy moment.
Where To Go:
Amazement Square, Lynchburg
Children’s Museum of Blacksburg, Blacksburg
Children’s Museum of Richmond, Richmond
Children’s Museum of Virginia, Portsmouth
Explore More Discovery Museum, Harrisonburg
Shenandoah Valley Discovery Museum, Winchester
Virginia Discovery Museum, Charlottesville

3. GET MUDDY ON AN ATV
Arguably the best time to ride an ATV is after or during the rain. Okay, that’s my opinion, but I’m sure there are many who would agree. It’s an adult’s version of jumping in puddles, and your kids will squeal with delight! Trust me on this.
Where To Go:
Appalachian Adventures, Luray
MotoCove Offroading, Gore
Spearhead Trails, Multiple Trail Heads in Southwest Virginia

4. HIT UP A MUSEUM
‘Tweens and teens in the mix? Introduce them to something new. From amazing paintings and sculptures to science and history, every single one of you will learn something when you take the time to visit a museum.
Tip: There are various programs that save you money on admission. Blue Star Museums offers active duty military and their families free admission to more than 80 Virginia sites. Museums on Us® gives Bank of America cardholders one free admission the first weekend of every month.

5. GO UNDERGROUND
In rain, snow, sleet, and heat, Virginia’s eight show caverns are an awesome place to be. Their constant 50-something-degree temperature is perfect for summer anyway.
Where To Go:
Dixie Caverns, Salem
Endless Caverns, New Market
Gap Caverns, Ewing
Grand Caverns, Grottoes

6. DANCE IN IT
There’s no way you thought I would omit dancing in the rain.
Many times moms don’t want to deal with wet kids and therefore, wet clothes and shoes scattered everywhere. Vacations are the exception to many rules. Let them have a magic moment – WITH YOU – that they will never forget. Whether you’re on the shifting sands of a beach, hopping over cobblestones somewhere historic, or purposefully landing in mud puddles under a canopy of old growth forest in the mountains, this is your time and place. This is your moment. Don’t miss it.
Your turn! What do you like to do with the kids when it’s raining? Please feel free to leave a kind comment.
