Rockn’ to Lockn’: Virginia Bands Compete for Festival Glory (Part 4)

Each week, four Virginia bands will battle it out for a chance to play the Lockn’ Music Festival in September.

Rockn’ to Lockn’ is a four night event, four city event with one band winning a much coveted performance spot at Lockn’, sharing the stage with the likes of The Doobie Brothers, Widespread Panic, Robert Plant, Gov’t Mule and many others.

On July 31, four Central Virginia bands will perform at Capital Ale House in Richmond.

Here are this week’s contenders:


The Southern Belles

Hometown: Richmond, Va.
Genre: Psychedelic, American, Rock & Roll

The Southern Belles play a mix of funky southern psychedelic rock & roll with elements of jazz, funk and country mixed in. The band brings its infectious live show to venues making people dance the entire night. Their songs are both fun and moving, as their lyrical stories evoke familiar emotions with each chorus and their musical journeys lend the perfect support.


Tin Can Fish Band

Hometown: Richmond, Va.
Genre: Folk Rock Roots

Progressive Folk Rock band Tin Can Fish Band plays original folk tunes as well as covering the great songs of Bob Dylan, Bruce Springsteen, the Rolling Stones, the Grateful Dead and more.

The Working Effective

Hometown: Charlottesville, Va.
Genre: Rock

The Working Effective is an East Coast folk-rock band whose songs feature catchy melodies and lyrics that range from playful to melancholy. Charlottesville-based singer/songwriter Justin Storer fronts the Brooklyn/Charlottesville Americana quintet. Storer cut his teeth as a songwriter in the Brooklyn folk scene. Though Storer often appears as a soloist, The Working Effective is still going strong as a full band.


Imaginary Sons

Hometown: Richmond, Va.
Genre: Rock

Imaginary Sons is a grunge rock band that is on a mission to save rock and roll. The band’s live set, which is full of costumes, loud rock and general good fun, is an experience to witness. The group recently released its latest record “Let It Beer.”

The third annual Lockn’ Festival will be held at Oak Ridge Farm in Arrington, Va. on Sept. 10–13, 2015.
