Seven Music Festivals in June Worth Checking Out

Summer is the time to get out and enjoy all the music festivals Virginia has to offer. June kicks everything off with a number of great music festivals of all music genres.

Friday Cheers – Richmond, Va.
Every Friday in June
Richmond’s summer concert series, Friday Cheers, brings some of the nation’s hottest touring acts, along with some regional favorites to Brown’s Island. This summer, thousands of people will come to relax after the work week to meet friends and hear music from Future Islands, Hurray for the Riff Raff, Snarky Puppy, The Wood Brothers and Son Little.

Dinwiddie Music Festival – Dinwiddie, Va.
June 4-6
The Virginia Motorsports Park will host more than 18 bands performing over three days and nights. Headlining the event includes 14-time Grammy Award winner Ricky Skaggs and 6-time Grammy Nominee – the Queen of Bluegrass Rhonda Vincent.

Strasburg Blues Festival – Strasburg, Va.
June 6
The First Annual Strasburg Blues Festival will kick off at the Strasburg Moose Ground and there will be seven (possibly more!) great blues bands performing. Local favorites Concrete Blues and Hard Swimmin’ Fish will be joining Washington Area Music Award winner Michael Tash with his incredible Bad Influence band, Clarence “The Bluesman” Taylor, and Albert Castiglia.

Mountains of Music Homecoming – 34 communities in Southwest Va.
June 12-20
The Crooked Road’s Mountains of Music Homecoming is a region-wide celebration of the traditional music and communities in Southwest Virginia. The event includes Crooked Road concerts in 34 communities, over 200 cultural experiences throughout the region, and over 70 existing traditional music related concerts, jam sessions, and festivals.

Wayne C. Henderson Music Festival and Guitar Competition – Mouth of Wilson, Va.
June 20
The region’s best bluegrass and old-time musicians will be performing at Grayson Highlands State Park in Mouth of Wilson, Virginia. The event is named after National Heritage Award recipient Wayne C. Henderson. He and many of his musical friends are featured performers at the festival, with bluegrass and old-time music dominating the program. The Wayne C. Henderson Music Festival and Guitar Competition was established in 1995 to express appreciation for this living legend. A portion of the proceeds from the festival are placed into a scholarship fund to aid local young musicians in continuing their educations.

Hampton Jazz Festival – Hampton, Va.
June 26-28
Celebrating 48 years of music, the Hampton Jazz Festival attracts the nation’s top blues, soul, pop, and jazz performers to the Hampton Coliseum. This year’s event is bringing in the likes of Jill Scott, Jennifer Hudson, Eric Benet, Trombone Shorty, Fantasia and many more.

Hardee’s Latin Fest – Virginia Beach, Va.
June 26-27
For two days, Virginia Beach celebrates the sights and sounds of the Latin experience with first-rate Latin music. National performers join local and regional Latin acts to unite festival-goers with the rhythms of Salsa, Merengue, and Jazz. All performances take place on a giant stage on the beach at 24th Street.
