75th D-Day event at the D-Day Memorial—Bedford

When: June 4-9, 2019The National D-Day Memorial

On June 6, 1944, the small town of Bedford, Virginia lost 20 of the 32 young men sent to liberate Europe in the invasion of Normandy during World War II. This devastating blow would leave the community reeling for decades to come, but their grief and pride for these young men led to Bedford being awarded the National D-Day Memorial site in 2001. Since its dedication, the touching World War II monument has drawn hundreds of thousands of visitors to the picturesque mountain site, and on June 4-9, the memorial will host a special event to recognize the 75th anniversary of D Day. Titled “The Final Salute”, the event will bring together World War II vets and the general public for what could be the last time, as the average age of surviving service members from the war is 96 years old. Attend this historic event to remember their extraordinary sacrifice of these veterans, both for their country and for the entire world.

Annual Norfolk Harborfest—Norfolk

Held on the Downtown Norfolk Waterfront, the Annual Norfolk Harborfest is a free three-day festival that celebrates Virginia’s maritime history with the Parade of Sail, a waterfront parade filled with tall ships, classic wooden boats, military vessels, sleek power cruisers, along with  special performances from regional and national entertainers, and hands-on activities for the entire family. Don’t miss Saturday’s Build-A-Boat challenge, where teams will construct boats from scratch using an array of materials and innovative engineering techniques, with their final results tested the following day during a thrilling race across the harbor waters. Stick around after the sun goes down on Saturday for the Harborfest Fireworks Display, the largest pyrotechnics show on the East Coast.

 

Mountains of Music Homecoming—Various Locations on the Crooked Road

The 5th Annual Mountains of Music Homecoming is nine days of nonstop music held in 40 different communities along The Crooked Road in Southwest Virginia. This historic festival includes 18 live concerts and 89 cultural events that highlight all aspects of Southwest Virginia, from the history, arts, and music of the region to the breathtaking outdoor scenery and the famed Appalachia cuisine. In addition to the concerts and cultural events, the Mountains of Music Homecoming includes four music festivals, notably Galax’s Houstonfest, an annual event featuring over 34 bluegrass and oldtime mountain music bands like Wayne Henderson & The Virginia Luthiers Band, Shenandoah, and Dori Freeman.
